PHYSICAL THERAPY AND YOUR FOURTH TRIMESTER

The 4th Trimester?  I thought there were only three trimesters in pregnancy?
Picture
The 4th trimester refers to months 0-3 of your adorable little baby’s new life, or your first 12 weeks postpartum.

While baby’s health is the primary focus during this time, proper recovery of mom’s body proves crucial to prevent pain and future dysfunction.

Physical therapy plays a vital role in
postpartum recovery.

Common issues women experience postpartum include:
· Urinary and Fecal Incontinence
· Sexual Dysfunction
· Pelvic Girdle and Low Back Pain
· Diastasis Recti
· Painful Scar Tissue
· Neck Pain and Posture Dysfunction with
  Breastfeeding and Childcare

The best time to address any of these areas is before they progress into further dysfunction. Many times they can’t be fixed by simply doing more kegels. Even if you had a cesarean delivery, physical therapy is  beneficial to recovery and helps prevent complications that can occur with scar tissue surrounding the incision. Pain, weakness, and incontinence are NOT “your new normal” since becoming a mom.

Physical Therapy can also help guide your return into a safe exercise program to regain core muscle strength along with overall fitness.

Moms, don’t forget to take care of your body so you can be healthy and able to take care of your new little bundle of joy!
